WATCHFUL APPETITES

WATCHFUL APPETITES

Proverbs 23:21
"For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags."

In a world designed to keep us constantly consuming—whether it be food, drink, or digital entertainment—the ability to say "no" to our impulses has become a rare and elite skill. A person who cannot control what they consume will never possess the sustained energy, mental clarity, or sharp focus required to build lasting wealth. Excessive consumption creates a physical and mental state of lethargy that makes the pursuit of excellence practically impossible.

Scripture is uncompromising in its warning: there is a direct, unbreakable correlation between how we manage our physical appetites and our ultimate financial outcome. We often think of gluttony and drunkenness as merely moral or health issues, but they are also economic inhibitors. They do not just harm the body; they dull the spirit and steal the golden hours needed for high-level productivity. Proverbs 20:13 advises, "Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread." When we indulge in excess, we are choosing a temporary pleasure over a permanent position of prosperity.

When a person gives themselves over to gluttony or overindulgence, they invite a state of constant drowsiness. This is the "little sleep, a little slumber, and a little folding of the hands" that leads to ruin. When your physical state is governed by overconsumption, your vigilance is the first casualty. You lose your edge; you become sluggish, reactive, and ultimately vulnerable. Poverty does not need to chase the person who has surrendered their discipline to their appetite; it simply walks in and waits for the drowsiness to take hold.

A wealthy mindset is a vigilant one. It understands that the discipline of the body is the prerequisite for the prosperity of the hands. To build wealth, you must remain wide awake, sober, and alert. This means curating what you consume—be it the food on your table, the media you watch, or the habits you cultivate. When you master your appetite, you reclaim your time, your health, and your focus. A disciplined body is a vessel for a productive life, and a controlled appetite is the foundation upon which your financial future stands.

Supporting Scriptures

1 Corinthians 9:25: "And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible."

Proverbs 25:28: "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls."

Titus 2:11–12: "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world."

Reflection

Are your current physical or mental habits fueling your productivity, or are they inducing a state of "drowsiness" that prevents you from reaching your goals? What is one appetite—whether in food, screen time, or luxury—that you need to master this week to regain your focus?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of my body and the call to be a faithful steward of my time and energy. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my appetites to govern my actions and for the moments of indulgence that have stolen my productivity. Grant me the grace to be temperate in all things. Strengthen my spirit to say "no" to the comforts that lead to poverty and "yes" to the disciplines that lead to life. Help me to remain sober, alert, and watchful, that I may build a future that honors You and provides for those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
